Sterling Abernathy is a 6th grader at Childers Middle
School in Broken Arrow, OK. He plays both the mandolin and guitar and just
recently began playing the fiddle. He started playing the guitar at eight
years of age and the mandolin at age ten. For the past three years, he has
been selected to play in the "Acoustic Kids" program at
the National Bluegrass Festival in Winfield, KS. He has played both the
guitar and the mandolin at this event. He played in the "Claremore
Bluegrass and Chili Festival" in September of 2004 and this last year,
played with his youth bluegrass band "New Blue Strings" at this annual
event. In April of 2005, Sterling won the Oklahoma State PTA Reflections
contest for the mandolin arrangement he wrote and was asked to play for
the
ground breaking ceremony for the new performing arts building in Broken
Arrow because of this accomplishment. One of his most memorable moments
occurred when he had the opportunity to meet and play for one of his
musical
role models-Ricky Skaggs at the Grand Palace in Branson, MO in 2003. Dr.
Sisney, superintendent of Broken Arrow Public Schools has requested for
Sterling to perform for the state administrators conference to be held
this coming summer in Oklahoma City. Sterling and "New Blue Strings"
played this last summer at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO and practice
regularly for appearances in several events throughout the area and
surrounding states.
He is currently playing the violin in the orchestra program at Childers
Middle School and the mandolin in his church's junior high praise and
worship band. Along with his love for music, he enjoys the computer,
church activities, drawing and playing basketball. |
