Mahlon
(Robert) of The Hackensaw Boys– plays the mandolin, guitar and banjo and
is a native of Hagerstown, MD where he grew up studious and a little
overly absorbed in books. Upon his move to Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1991,
Mahlon began playing electric guitar with alt-country groovers Fried
Moose. After falling from a barn roof in Chuchville, VA, banging his head
against the walls of the District of Columbia, and recklessly engaging in
graduate activity at the University of Virginia, he developed a keen
awareness of his own inherent clumsiness. Rather than dwell on the
negative, however, Mahlon chose to see the bright side of things and
forsook the amplifiers and stratocasters of his youth to take up the
mandolin and music bequeathed him by his great uncle – a founding member
of the Roanoke Jug Band (1927-30). Consistently voted “most reasonable” of
the Hackensaws, Mahlon currently divides his time between Charlottesville
and Richmond, Virginia.
