Rik Barron
is a singer, songwriter, musician and
recording artist for both children and adults. He first burst upon the
scene at the tender age of 15, when he was named Best Stringed
Instrumentalist by the Newfoundland Folk Arts Council. Today, Rik
Barron is well known and respected an a master banjo player and
multi-instrumentalist who continues to receive rave reviews from audiences
through Canada, the United States and Europe.
Rik is a traditionalist in the true sense of the word. In his younger
years he studied at the Apprentice Shop in Springhill, Tennessee where he
learned fretted instrument construction and repair. Today, Rik not only
plays, but also builds and repairs banjos, guitars and mandolins.
Although born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Rik and his family moved to
Prince Edward Island in 1994. He is now a frequent performer at local
festivals and concerts on the Island where both his adult and children's
music are in demand. His smooth baritone vocals and his ability to move
effortlessly from one instrument to another has made him a huge hit on the
International Folk Music Scene. The Maryland Banjo Academy, an
institution which attracts banjo players and students from all over the
world recognized Rik's unique banjo playing style back in 1997 and invited
him to become a member of their faculty. And in February of the Year 2000,
The East Coast Music Association honored Rik by voting him Children's
Artist Of The Year.
