Lois Ellett from Brighton
on the UK’s south coast,
started learning mandolin
with a Weber Sweet Pea in
2002; for fun and to help
her quit smoking by
practicing mandolin
instead. Now a non-smoker
and getting more confident
about her playing, Lois now
also has a “beautifully
melodious” Weber Gallatin
and has joined The Fretful
Federation; billed as
“the UK’s most prestigious,
25-piece, plucked
orchestra”.

Lois plays a variety of
classical and contemporary
pieces with the orchestra
and a mixture of newgrass
and acoustic ballads for her
own enjoyment. She
recognizes there’s still lots
to learn about mandolin
playing, but has great fun
in the process. When she
can play well enough
she next aims for a custom
Weber mandolin.
Lois’ musical influences
are The Be Good Tanya’s,
Jolie Holland, Chris Thile,
Tim O’Brien, Mike
Marshall, Cara Dillon,
Neil Young, Leonard
Cohen, Roger Chapman,
Tori Amos, Hem, Kate
Rusby, Cerys Matthews,
and many others.
