Allan
Slutsky is a guitarist, mandolinist, arranger, author and movie producer
who lives just outside of Philadelphia in Cherry Hill, NJ. He is mostly
known to guitarists for his "Dr. Licks" transcription series books that
have been sold around the world by Hal Leonard Publishing since 1984. He
is the recipient of the Rolling Stone/BMI "Ralph J. Gleason Award"
for his book "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown: The Life & Music Of
Legendary Bassist James Jamerson" and is also a Grammy award winning
producer for the movie and soundtrack "Standing In The Shadows Of
Motown." His most recent book is "The Funkmasters: The Great James Brown
Rhythm Sections 1960-1972" (Warner Bros. Publications), and he is a
contributing writer for BASS PLAYER, GUITAR PLAYER, MODERN DRUMMER, and
KEYBOARD magazines.
Allan spent 2002 through 2004 touring around the world with Motown's
legendary studio band The Funk Brothers as their musical director,
guitarist, and manager, where he had the opportunity to work with guest
vocalists like Steve Winwood, Chaka Kahn, Mary Wilson, Joan Osborne,
Bootsy Collins, Nancy and Anne Wilson, Peabo Bryson, and Billy Preston.
A Philadelphia studio musician, the majority of his work for the last two
decades has been in the casino showrooms of Atlantic City where's he's
played in orchestras behind acts like Luciano Pavarotti, Don Rickles,
Bernadette Peters, Michael Feinstein and numerous others, and in musical
theater where he's played dozens of musicals including Chicago, Big,
Mama Mia, Floyd Collins, Annie, Barry Manilow's Copacabana, and now
Chasing Nicolette, which has the most extensive mandolin writing in
the history of Broadway musicals.
For that show, Allan bought the pictured Weber Gallatin so he could do the
part justice by complimenting the brilliant orchestration with a
brilliant, world-class sounding instrument.
