Specifications

The Yellowstone is
the longest free-
flowing river in the United States.  It flows from cold, clear and deep Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park.  At over 7,000 feet in elevation, it's the largest high altitude lake in the world.

French trappers
named the river for
the golden sandstone cliffs along the lower and middle courses.  The river got it's name long before any European saw the brilliant yellow color of Yellowstone Canyon in Yellowstone National Park.
